Oh, Habeshas, did you see the buzz?
Our beautiful Ethiopia was recently graced by a whirlwind visit from IShowSpeed, the lively internet personality! As soon as the videos started popping up – him exploring Addis Ababa, trying on traditional clothes, and soaking in our vibrant culture – my phone lit up. Cousins, aunties, friends from every corner of the were sharing clips, beaming with pride. It was more than just a celebrity visiting; it felt like a spotlight shining on the heart of our homeland, reminding us all of the incredible spirit, beauty, and warmth that defines Ethiopia.
And you know, whenever our beloved country gets global attention like that, my mind, like many of yours, inevitably drifts to what truly makes Ethiopia unforgettable: its people, its history, and, *of course*,
its unparalleled cuisine.
It’s that taste of home, that aroma of spices wafting through the kitchen, that really connects us across oceans and time zones. Watching Speed immerse himself in our world, it got me thinking about the universal language of food, and how a simple dish can transport us back to grandma’s kitchen, even when we’re thousands of miles away.
IShowSpeed’s visit was a beautiful moment for Ethiopia. It brought a certain kind of joy, seeing our streets, our smiles, and our unique traditions showcased to a global audience. For those of us living abroad, it was a potent reminder of where we come from, a burst of pride that warms the heart and soul. Ethiopia, for many, isn't just a place on a map; it's the rhythm of a "
kirar", the rich aroma of coffee brewing, the shared laughter over a plate of "
injera".

In his live stream we see how:
* He was officially welcomed by the Minister of Tourism, and began by touring the Adwa Victory Memorial, where he walked barefoot as a symbolic tribute to Ethiopia’s heroes who defeated colonial forces, a powerful moment that resonated globally.
* He sampled local foods like injera and raw meat, joined in traditional dances, played indigenous instruments, and even took part in local sporting activities, all broadcast live for his millions of followers.
* Addis Ababa’s urban development, traditional sites, and vibrant youth culture were showcased alongside the historic and modern sides of the city.
The livestream became one of his tour’s most-watched episodes, pulling in record engagement figures, counting hundreds of thousands of live viewers (9.9m views in less than 24 hours!), and contributing to significant gains in his overall subscriber base. Ethiopian audiences especially younger viewers helped make the stream a trending global topic.
So, while IShowSpeed brought a new kind of spotlight to Ethiopia, let’s remember that the true light of our culture shines brightest in moments like these – sharing stories, sharing food, and sharing the love that binds us as one big Habesha family.
What are your favorite memories associated with our culture? How do you keep the flavors of home alive in your kitchen?
